I once thought I could get through my whole life without talking about my colon. Or even thinking about it for that matter….That was until my early 50’s, when I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. After much soul searching I chose to forego a hysterectomy, chemo and radiation, choosing to first try Detoxification Therapy.
The first step when you embark on this kind of healing journey is to begin consuming large quantities of fresh pressed juices, chlorophyll rich wheatgrass juice, fiber rich organic live plant-based foods, unpasteurized fermented foods and mineral rich sea vegetables.
The second step is to develop a deep and intimate relationship with your colon.
I am from New England so this began as a stretch for me. If you are from other parts of the world you may not know that New England is the part of the United States settled by the Puritans. Can you say “naturally up-tight”? You can bet we weren’t talking about constipation, enemas or colon hydrotherapy in that part of the country when I was growing up. Or not in my adult years either, for that matter…. Anything having to do with elimination, or non-elimination for that matter, was a taboo subject. “That’s the way we liked it, private and quiet.”
But I wanted to get well with every fiber of my being, so I followed the directions of my pioneering mentor Dr Ann Wigmore. She had healed herself from colon cancer. She was adamant about the power of colon cleansing to address constipation and toxemia, the root causes of diseases like arthritis, chronic migraines, Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, candida and cancer. She teaches that unless the body’s elimination channels are open and clear at all times the best nutrition on Earth will not make you well.
Fortunately, true healing happens over time. This gave me room to get comfortable with this remote part of my body. When talking detox, people typically think about the liver. But if the ‘exit door’ is blocked, such as when your chronically constipated, there is nowhere for harmful toxins to go except to re-circulate. Recirculating toxins cause trouble.
With trepidation, I ordered my first ever enema bucket off amazon. And, I bravely made my first weekly appointment with an understanding and gentle professional colon hydrotherapist. I have a bit of a rebel streak about me but I also know when it’s time to surrender for my greater good.
I followed the regimen Dr Ann recommended to the letter. After years of eating fiberless foods day in and day out, contributing to my chronically constipated state, I went out and filled the fridge with fresh foods and committed to eating them uncooked as instructed. Why? Because cooked food fiber is too soggy to sweep the intestines clean. One of the main purposes of consuming fiber is elimination. Without live food fiber, complete elimination is nearly impossible.
Turns out there are two main kinds of live food fiber: Soluble and Insoluble.
Soluble fiber is found in seeds like chia, flax and sunflower. Vegetables like avocados, sea vegetables, cucumbers and peas. Fruits like watermelon, apples and strawberries. Soluble digestive fiber dissolves foods into a gel-like texture. Under the microscope soluble fiber looks like a sponge. And, like a sponge, it can absorb many time more toxins than its own volume. It grabs up toxins and literally takes them out of the body.
Insoluble fiber is found in foods like dark leafy greens, celery, beets, radish and carrots. Nuts like almonds and Brazil. These foods are also known as “roughage”, with tough cell walls. They not only add bulk to the stool but they act as “Natures Broom”, sweeping the intestinal walls as they pass through of fungus and parasites.
The need for soluble and insoluble fiber for colon health is one reason Dr Ann did not believe in long, juice only, fasting. For many people juice alone does not address a backed-up colon.
NOTE: Conscious detoxing means staying in tune with your individual body. After a lifetime of no fiber, too much fiber too fast may cause gas and bloating. Adding live-fermented food to the cleanse, such as unpasteurized miso soup, soothes the digestive track while rebuilding the mitochondria. In time, with patience, you can coax your body back to balance.
Dr Ann’s promise is that her discoveries can heal the most chronic of diseases for anyone dedicated enough to try. And, of course I found that to be true.

THE TIME IS RIGHT NOW!
In America alone, 90% of the adult population is suffering from one or more chronic food related diseases. Modern food is making us collectively sick while the pharmaceutical companies are promising to make us well. It’s the perfect scam and billions of dollars are at stake if the system stays the same.
As agents of change, when we see people suffer and we know a way to help, we want to step in. Let people know that they do not have to merely tolerate life. They need never settle for just surviving. They can reach higher and live a great, magnificent and outstanding life. But first they have to learn a new way to be in the world. A new form of self-care. This is the education we offer at Diet For Living School. We teach you what you need to know to inspire and impact the lives of others. That’s how we build a happier, healthier world together.

“After completing my Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) Health Coach Certification, I was struggling to find my area of expertise and passion to feel more centered with my business. After losing my dear Aunt to ovarian cancer after an almost 3 year battle using conventional means and a 4th time diagnosis of breast cancer for my Mother, I was inspired to dive into the world of detox and prevention of cancer and other diseases. This lead me to the Diet For Living School and after researching their offerings and reviews, I jumped in! I was so happy to have found amazing training that focuses on living foods and structured in such a way that truly helps the coach to educate their client on a variety of topics and research to fully empower them to regain their health.
