No One Is Born With Limited Belief Systems; They Are Built Into Us
America is very proud of it’s reputation for being “Home of the Brave”. Both young men and women are taught early to detach from their feelings, to “toughen-up”, “cut out the whining”, “suck it up”, “buck-up” “get on with it” or some variation of this training. For many of us, enduring has become our deep personal narrative.
The implication of this generational programming is a people hardwired to persevere, afraid to ask for help, afraid to admit they need help. Often unaware that they even need help.
Yet many of us are navigating new waters when it comes to our health. Diseases and malfunctions of the body that where once considered ‘old peoples’ diseases are now defining peoples lives earlier and earlier. For osteoporosis, heart disease, hip and knee replacements, the new average age is now in the 40’s and 50’s range with colon cancer 35. Today whole families struggle with diabetes and kidney disease starting in their twenties. Breast cancer was once unheard of in women in their 30’s. Today it is not at all uncommon. Yet this should never be considered a ‘new normal’.
The Western medical system says the problems can’t be fixed. Our only option is to learn to manage the situation. Then hang-on….hold out….power through….ENDURE…
OTHER WORDS FOR ENDURE: ride out, suffer, tolerate, withstand, bear the brunt, cope with, grin and bear it, put up with, stick it out, submit to, hang in…..
This is great advice if your climbing Mount Everest; the snow is deep, the winds are howling, it’s coming on dark and your only choice is to power on, one foot in front of the other, till you make it safely to base camp. But this toughen-up mentality no longer applies to the present American Health Epidemic where 90% of the population is now suffering with some form of chronic disease. It creates a population often too embarrassed and too ashamed that we may not be tough enough.
I am not suggesting that we can eliminate all pain on Earth…..I am only opening the conversation up to how we view diseases now understood as food related. Because, when we spend our days fighting illness, we remain in survival mode and lose our ability to thrive, grow and prosper.
No one is born with limited belief systems. They are built into us.
I strongly believe that we have to step out from behind the barricade of just holding on….find our way back to that place in us that is connected to a new way to navigate in the world. Get proactive, ask new questions, investigate new solutions. In many instances the answers will not match up to what Western medicine has led us to assume. Often the new information will offer us far more hope than we have been led to believe: A brighter horizon of possibilities.
My own healing journey from cancer taught me so much. As a kid my mom told me daily to “stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry for”…..”shut-up, don’t ask so many questions…your getting on my last nerve”. The continual message was to toughen-up and accept what is. But it was that need to ask a thousand questions, step off the well trodden path of cancer care and take a chance that I believe saved my life.
Cancer is now understood first as a disease connected to eating too many inflammatory foods loaded with toxic chemicals and sugars. That was certainly the truth and honesty of my old diet. How I loved breads, pastries and butter….partnered with an omelet with three kinds of cheese. And I adored a couple of large latte’s in the morning, and maybe one “to get me through the afternoon”.
My idea of closing down the day was Kahlua and milk chocolate chips with each sip. “OMG those were the days”. I thought, “oh well, we all have our ‘bad girl’ foods. What’s the harm?”
LIVING A NEW DAY A NEW WAY
But here’s the thing. I had early arthritis in my 40’s. Some days I could barely walk. My mobility had begun to look bleak. I had chronic fatigue with a brain so foggy I could barely group three words together. I was embarrassed and ashamed. I felt way too young to be in such decrepit shape.
Yet I didn’t relate it to my diet. I too may have continued to endure it, power on. Except for the cancer diagnosis. It brought the whole ‘carb and sugar party’ to a complete halt. In an attempt to save my life I was introduced to the healing principles of Dr Ann Wigmore. They consist of detoxing the body with massive amounts of fresh organic juices and heaps of green salads and trading in my dairy and egg obsession for alkaline proteins in the form of fermented plant-based nut cheeses and fresh almond milk made into delicious green smoothies. I learned to address my years of constipation with fiber rich foods. Colon hydrotherapy became a key component of my healing regimen. I learned to reconnect with my body….. When every ailment disappeared I became a passionate advocate of detoxification and diet change to heal cancer and other chronic diseases.
Studies have shown that if you survive your first bout of cancer, 45% of cancers return if you don’t embrace radical diet change. For how long? The answer: For the rest of your life. For me the sugar party was over. I no longer wanted to wake up daily to do battle with addictive foods that were robbing me of my quality life. And I definitely no longer wanted to be in pain or suffer.
Maybe like you, in the early days of my journey I needed to seek help, because using foods as a healing tool was a new concept to me. With research I found a budding community of raw foodists in my city. I discovered there was an Ann Wigmore Retreat Center an hour and a half away in the desert. I volunteered in the kitchen for a year. There I learned a whole new way to live my life.
THE EARLY YEARS
Hubby Joseph and I offered to host our then small Albuquerque Raw Food Meet-up Group. It had maybe 20 members. We had to run around borrowing chairs for the first pot-luck dinners. We built membership to 850. In time we started offering 2 hour classes on Saturdays, teaching the very basics of detox cleansing foods and selling juicers. The interest and need encouraged us to start a school, offering 4 day hands-on trainings. It was time for a website. That made us global!!! People arrived to our classes from Canada, Australia, Argentina, England, Dubai, and all over the United States…..traveling to the small city of Albuquerque, New Mexico to learn how to improve their own health and that of their families and their communities using Food As Medicine. Since the Pandemic, our training is now 100% on line so we can reach more people….
