What do Morgan Freeman, Micheal Douglas, Kirstie Alley, Sharon Stone, Katie Holmes, Chadwick Boseman, Elizabeth Montgomery, Sharon Osborne, Katie Couric, Bill Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Vince Lombardi, Craig Roh, and James Van Der Beek have in common? They have all had colon cancer.
This is just a drop in the bucket as more than 150,000 men and women are diagnosed with colon cancer each year in America, with colorectal cancer rising rapidly in young adults in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, according to the National Institute Of Health.
The gold standard for screening is the colonoscopy. With the rise of diagnoses in young people gastroenterologists now recommend that for anyone 45 years of age or older to plan on screening on the regular. But many professionals believe that 45 is already too late for the present crisis and want to lower the age range to include anyone in their 30’s. Research shows that finding colon cancer at an early stage can lead to a five-yr survival rate.
WESTERN MEDICINE REFUSING TO TAKE A STAND
Yet with all this attention to screening, conventional Western medicine does not want to take a definitive stand on what is causing the numbers to rapidly rise in young people as well as the rest of the population. They are still absurdly waffling about on the topic….scratching their heads, saying “They have no clear answer” as to why the numbers keep climbing each year….this makes me a little crazy….and heres why….
NOTE: This newsletter is not intended to debunk screening; only to bring light to it’s limitations.
The growing number of colon cancer cases is not a far fetched mystery to me. It is linked to our modern, fiberless Western diet, high in refined flour foods and meats that create what is called a ‘sluggish colon’. Our Paleo hunter-gather ancestors consumed an estimated 100 to 150 grams of fiber per day. Today, most adults clock in at 10-15 grams. Today’s recommendations are at least 40 grams. That sounds more realistic. (TIP: If you presently have a low fiber diet, take it slow introducing new foods to avoid gas and bloating. Fermented foods are already broken down through the fermentation process and easier on the digestive track. A great place to start. Give yourself time to adapt. Slow and steady wins your health back).
If you add the habit of not drinking filtered water throughout your waking hours you will have what is called a ‘dry colon’. Sluggish and dry do not encourage movement. The exit door becomes blocked. If your body cannot evacuate waste daily, as it is designed to do, you allow these acid forming foods to sit in the colon day in and day out, sometimes for years, at a temperature of 98.6 degrees…. microbes and pathogens build up….A equals B….you will be incubating disease.
Western approach to screening of colon cancer is to pop in for your scheduled procedure and then pop back into your life, whether it supports health or not….but what the body is really needing is involvement. I say this with total realization and with all humility. When I got my own cancer wake-up call I had been living in disconnect and denial for years concerning my own sluggish, dry colon and chronic constipation. I had so many inner signals I’d missed and now I was in the danger zone as I struggled to win my life back.
What I learned about repairing and maintaining a healthy colon I want to share with you….because chronic constipation contributes to cancer and every food related disease we now suffer with as a population….
THE TOP THREE
ONE: Load up on room temp filtered water everyday. And yes, it’s gotta be room temp or warmer. Ice water slows down colon activity. I know some of you say, “But I can’t drink so much water at work; it makes me pee”. It can feel like a challenge but room temp filtered water is life saving and the colon will not, can not, work on dry. One trick I’ve learned is to drink 5 ounces of water every half hour. The bodily tissues and organs can more easily absorb this amount without the urge to run to the bathroom.
TWO: America’s favorite side vegetable is french fries. But what we really need is an organic rainbow raw salad with both lunch and dinner. For two reasons: The obvious? The roughage helps keep the bowel moving. But the second reason is that veggies like kale, spinach, watercress, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red peppers, green onions and beets, are 85% liquid. The colon love, love, loves vitamin and mineral rich water from veggies.
THREE: Treat your gut flora like your new BF. The absence of a healthy, robust gut microbiome can lead to colon cancer. These friendly microscopic bacteria fight off foreign invaders like yeasts, molds, and candida, while supporting the immune system and reducing inflammation in the gut. There is no magic to this step. To keep this essential system in peak condition means eating foods that promote and maintain a healthy colony of microorganisms. The foods that do the job best are ONLY FOUND IN NATURE. Not man made, not heavily marketed pasteurized yogurts with random bacteria in little plastic tubs. Not over the counter whitey-white lifeless probiotic supplements you can just slip in your mouth and call it one and done. These lab created supplements do not come close to matching the Divine genius of the 100 trillion bacteria in the microbial colony in our intestines that weigh around 200g.
The Probiotic Industry is a 9 billion dollar a year business and is to be considered a marketing scam. Only Living Foods Support Living Life.
People across the globe that do not experience the digestive problems and cancers we do have been consuming live fermented foods since the beginning of time. In our Diet For Living School training we have a genuine passion for organic unpasteurized kraut, kimchi and the multitude of old world misos made the traditional way over time in wooden barrels. This is what we mean by using ‘Food As Medicine’: A world of foods that support our health, not cause us harm.
